A tribute to Mary Dodkins Chair of the SHG who sadly died on the 13th October 2015

Mary’s passing is a great loss, not only to her family and friends but to the wider world of heritage, which she fought to promote and protect, through her vision and creation of the Staffordshire Heritage Group,  as Secretary of the Friends of the William Salt Library and active involvement with her beloved 17th century re-enactor groups.  She also worked hard for her local community as Parish Councillor and Eccleshall Youth Club.

Many of us will remember her with love, affection and great respect and miss her warm friendship and outgoing personality.  Despite her disabilities she faced the world with a confident, positive outlook, and a vibrant and clever mind that never failed to entertain and inform us all.

Mary’s clear strategic way of thinking spearheaded the campaign to save the William Salt Library building and without her we would not have the Staffordshire Heritage Group.

We will continue with her good work both as a memorial to her memory and to maintain the work of the Staffordshire Heritage Group, and continue the campaign to keep the William Salt Library the unique historic gem it is today.

In our lifetime we meet, and sadly lose, people who touch our lives and leave a lasting influence, these form our precious memories, and Mary is one of them.

Welcome To Staffordshire Heritage Group

We are an umbrella group for all the local history, genealogy and archaeology groups within Staffordshire, which meets four times a year, at the Civic Offices in Stafford.

We promote, maintain, and encourage good practice, research, preservation of records and collaboration with other interested bodies in connection with local history, genealogy and archaeology.

Staffordshire really stands out in history, from its Stone Age origins, through Roman and medieval times to modern industrial life. We have towns and villages with churches, castles and stately homes reflecting the unique identity of our area.
